Hey aggressive fat loss lovers,
I am NOT saying this is better than veggies. But I do think that there is a time and a place for green drinks, and generally when you’re intermittent fasting or you’re following low carb, it is a good place to implement them.
Look, I talk about the benefits of fiber and short chain fatty acids, etc all the time on my channel. So I am always going to stand behind eating the whole food form above all else, but when it comes to the micronutrient aspect, it is something we have to think about.
I notice if I have been fasting a lot that I start to develop some insufficiencies in my nutrition.
Not because I am not trying, but because I am simply eating a significantly smaller amount, and by sheer volume of food, I am just not getting what I should.
Especially with the water soluble vitamins and minerals.
The new greens drink I have been using is from Organifi (I’ve known their founder, Drew for like 7 years now). Get my personal 20% off discount on it here
One of the main reasons I like it (besides the new Crisp Apple flavor being insanely good) is that they use an effective dose of Ashwagandha in it (600mg). I’m huge on adding adaptogens after fasting, so this is a big plus.
I would not suggest using green drinks during your actual fast, because the antioxidant content (although a super good thing) is not what you want to have during a fast.
During the fast, you want your body to upregulate it’s OWN antioxidant production. That’s how you get the cellular hormetic stressor effect of a fast. Taking potent antioxidants DURING a fast can actually inhibit the natural response from occuring.
But AFTER you break your fast, you have a high degree of cellular metabolism that is occurring to utilize the food that you’re now consuming.
Your body is sort of kicking into overdrive to metabolize food that it has been waiting so long for, so THIS is a great time to add Organifi (20% off here) to help potentially scavenge free radicals after breaking your fast.
Now, if you’re not fasting, I would usually recommend having a greens in the evening time. But if you have greens along with a higher fat meal, you might be able to assimilate more of the fat soluble vitamins that way.
There are even some relatively recent studies showing that when doing keto, we sometimes miss out on nutrients.
Here’s a study published in Nutrients that was pretty intriguing: What they found is that during the 12-week keto diet in “healthy” obese adults, the intakes of calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, chloride, vitamins C, B6, B12, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, and folic acid were significantly reduced.
Additionally, vitamins A and D already did not meet the recommendations at baseline but did not change further because of the intervention
Essentially demonstrating that keto itself didn’t CAUSE the deficiencies, but people generally were not making great choices and thei
ll into. It’s easy to just get by without eating much and that’s that.
Unfortunately, with a stark contrast of suddenly eating much less, you can see how it could eventually lead to a deficiency.
Even people that are doing carnivore are usually consuming enough liver, kidney, and brain to get adequate water and fat soluble vitamins.
The bottomline is that it takes a conscious effort and it should be paid attention to.
If you’re doing low carb, nutrient rich veggies NEED to be a part of your routine. Dr. Berg and I have both talked about this to the enth degree!
So, no, greens drinks will NOT fix your entire diet, so don’t get me wrong.
But I know an awesome product when I see one and I also love supporting my buddy Drew who has a good product with only a couple grams of carbs in it 🙂
I’ll see you tomorrow! Aggressivefatloss.com
