UC Davis last year had announced that close to 80% of all Avocado Oil was fake, rancid, or not really Avocado oil…
In fact, a lot of it was bonafide SOYBEAN Oil… Total nonsense!
But a lot of people don’t know that UC Davis had published a report in 2015 that 69% of store bought olive oils were fake as well.
Avocado and Olive Oils are both oils that I recommend copious amounts of. Whether you’re doing keto, intermittent fasting, or just trying to add more monounsaturated fats into your diet, they’re one of the most powerful things you can consume.
I’d say, that by far the biggest reason that I consume a lot of these oils is because of the conversion of one of the primary fats (oleic acid) into something called OEA. In short, it helps you burn more calories at rest.
You use more calories just standing around because you create more heat.
The way that this OEA works in the body is it activates something called PPARa which in turn expressed something called PGC-1a…
What does this mean?
(First, if you want to skip the gobble-de-goop sciencey stuff, here’s a link to try my preferred Olive Oil which is air-shipped directly from harvest and is sincerely AWESOME tasting stuff. This is a $1 Trial offer to give it a try (just pay shipping) – Check out Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club here
Well, it means that it helps our body develop more mitochondria (energy powerhouses) in an area of our body called the brown fat tissue.
This brown fat has an interesting component in the mitochondria… It has more Uncoupling proteins… What does that mean?
Uncoupling proteins (UCP-1) create an inefficiency in how the mitochondria manufactures energy… Where instead of taking the calories that we consume and converting them into an energy that needs to be USED OR STORED….
It gets dissipated as heat.
Imagine eating food, and having a percentage of the calories from that food just get burned off as heat.
So, you can imagine how ticked off I was when I realized that 80% of avocado oils and 69% of extra virgin olive oil was fake.
The bottomline is this.
You should be adding your fat calories from these kinds of oils whenever possible. Instead of adding coconut oil or cheese, lean into the olive oil or avocado oil because the net calorie burn you get from it is simply more.
And contrary to what a lot of people will say, TRUE, good quality olive oil you can actually cook with. It still remains stable, unless at a very high heat.
My friends at the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club offered up a $1 trial to try their olive oil (just pay shipping) – So here is a link to try it out.
In the interim, if you’re shopping at the grocery store, here’s a few tips for shopping for Olive Oil.
1) Always Look for a harvest date. This is super important because it can indeed go rancid. If they’re transparent about the harvest date and not just the best-by date, it can tell you a ton!
2) At the store, look for a 3rd party certification seal. Although this can be total horse-doodoo too, if you ask me. People can spin up random certification programs just to look legit. But, it’s better than going in totally blind!
3) Look for a light and bright green color that has a lot of fruitiness to the taste. If it tastes bland… it’s probably because it is a bland oil with little nutritional value. Also, try to find one that is in a dark bottle so that it is protected more from the UV light that can affect rancidity.
4) Do your research. You’re better off just getting unrefined coconut oil at the store if you don’t have time to do your research. Seriously. It’s better to get a completely different oil than to accidentally ingest soybean oil being pawned off as soybean oil.
Why these companies aren’t in jail for fraud, I really don’t know. It’s pretty frustrating… I can get a ticket for jaywalking, but people can get away with completely selling an oil that is different than what is stated on the bottle.
Sidenote- They usually claim that it is the olive farm’s fault and default to that. Then it turns into a game of he-says she-says.
Anyhow, in my book, The New Mediterranean Diet which is still a best seller on Amazon, we had gone into a lot of detail as to why Olive Oil is such a great addition to ANY diet, not just keto and when you’re cooking with it, it’s extra important to find a stable, good quality EVOO.
And a big thanks to Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club for offering up the $1 Olive Oil promo to my readers and viewers. If you’ve seen my pantry, that stuff takes up an entire shelf for me, ha!
As always, I will see you tomorrow!
