Almost 11 Years of keeping 100lbs off. That’s a long time to stay motivated.
Honestly, nowadays, since I maintain a certain look and performance for my career (making videos), it is harder and harder to stay motivated.
What’s the goal, right?
Now, my motivation shifts to things like:
- How do I feel my best for my family?
- How do I stay motivated to keep making videos?
- How do I NOT get frustrated by the science sometimes?
- How do I not procrastinate on things that are important when I am so tired?
-
So I have come up with 5 things that I do (and take) NOW to keep me going.
NOW that I am older, have different aspirations outside of just looking a certain way to get views on YouTube, right?
- I Repeatedly Think “This is What it Feels like RIGHT NOW!
This is because I find myself always thinking about the future, even 5 seconds in the future. Try this. Next time you’re going through some brutal exercise or something that causes moderate discomfort or pain, really comprehend what you’re thinking about. Usually it’s something like this:
“This hurts, and it’s going to hurt for a long time.”
That is future-tripping at it’s finest. And it is not real. The bottom line is that you do not know what it will feel like in five seconds. You know what it feels like RIGHT NOW.
This pain in my hip… this is RIGHT now. This struggle with my toddler…. This is RIGHT now.
It is amazing what this mindset has done for me in the way of burnout and just keeping focus on things that matter in that moment.
- I strategically use nootropics, but don’t overdo it.
I think that a little kick in the butt is worthwhile, but not letting yourself become dependent on an external or exogenous compound.
Nootropics don’t have to be these crazy, intense, mood-altering substances. If they help us change our pattern of thought in the short-term, we can sometimes get a LONG TERM effect out of the plasticity of our brains I use one called Qualia Focus.
I generally hear 3 main reasons that people don’t take Nootropics:
- Skepticism. Even though the research and science on nootropics is crystal clear that they can support mental performance, there’s still plenty of total hype “nootropic formulas” out there. And that is my biggest hesitation too
- Expensive: Even if you research enough to find a legit great nootropic formula, they can run some pretty serious price tags. At that rate, just have caffeine.
- Lack Of Knowledge of what’s In it: This is a big one because most brands hide their ingredients behind ‘proprietary blends,’ so you never know what you’re taking. FORGET that!
I have been using Qualia Focus lately because it’s more focused on motivation and direct focus versus a life-changing, mood-altering experience.
I like it because I feel like it helps me stop procrastinating and get things done. Not that I am a big procrastinator, but since having kiddos, the exhaustion sometimes makes me put off to tomorrow what I could do today.
And to me, that feels like it’s not in-line with my moral compass.
So, use a nootropic that is more geared towards what you’re after (motivation, focus, getting the job done) .

- Lower Weight, but SLOWER Reps for more of a BURN when I need brain performance:
This one is a 2-parter. For one, the more stressed I am, the less sleep I get, and the more I just have to deal with life, the less I have time to recover from an insane Central-nervous-system blast with my workouts. So this is just better for recovery FOR ME, these days
I have found (and since reinforced with good research), that training for more of a lactic acid (lactate) burn seems to help my brain focus more.
I think that for one, the burn that you endure forces you to become more present. You run into a fatigue that is there because it hurts in a good way, not because your joints are shutting down.
This alone build resiliency and allows for some mental toughness without gritting through aches and pains that are legitimately damaging.
Secondly, the production of lactate (the burn we feel – well actually it’s hydrogen that burns, but still) is a tremendous fuel for the brain. So when we recycle lactate from the burn of a workout, it can actually provide us with some more focus.
This is why I do this on filming days. My routine on filming days has become like this, in fact:
- ACV when I wake up
- Coffee Pre Workout
- BFR or Slow, Time Under Tension Workout for 30 mins
- 15 Mins of HIIT to clear it out
- MCT Oil Prior to Filming with some Green Tea and maybe Lion’s Mane
- Qualia Focus (1 Capsule, then 3 hours later, 2 more)
- Binaural Beats or Isochronic Tones while Reviewing Research
- Hydrate heavily
- 1,500-2,000mg Sodium throughout the day
- Focus on INTENTION vs Goal
This may seem like a really “woo-woo Witch Doctor” kind of thing. And that is fine if you think that, but don’t knock it til you try it.
Goals are breakable. We change them, we change, we cheat to reach them. They’re not real. Totally arbitrary and don’t often align with our core-values.
I live with intention each day. I wake up with the intent of living a certain way. I want to live with gratitude, I want to live with respect for animals and other people, I want to live with the intention of helping others, but of course, I am also in business, so I’m not afraid to live with the intent of moving the economy forward in a profitable and value-driven way.
I have found that making this shift makes me a better person, a better parent, a better content creator, and it leaves me with a heck of a lot less stress at the end of the day, knowing I am following my moral compass.
Authenticity is also important. People will always say what they have to say about my content, my business, my family. But I know at the end of the day, that as long as transparency and integrity lead the way… you always sleep easy.
TRASH YOUR GOAL SHEET.
- Binaural Beats or Isochronic Tones
I’ve done videos on these. But when it comes down to being able to really zone my brain into the present, wow, do they work.
Literally open up pandora and search for ‘binaural beats’ and you will see what I mean. They are weird frequencies of sounds that have been demonstrated in multiple journals to have profound effects on changing our brain waves into different states.
It is a cost-free way to see if it helps you. I even go for runs while listening to weird 20hz frequencies sometimes.
You laugh… and you can judge all you want.
But I do crank out 50-60 videos per month on my channel, and you know that takes at least some focus hahaha.
PS – Taking Qualia Focus along with some Binaural Beat sessions… Whoa, prepare to be on a 3-hour mission of “Getting-Stuff-Done” Mode… no joke
